Alex Abiko
is a Professor of Civil Engineering and former Head of the Department of
Civil Engineering at the Polytechnic School of the University of São
Paulo in Brazil.
John J. Betancur
is an
Associate Professor in the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs
at the University of Illinois at Chicago. A native of Medellin,
Colombia, he is working with various Colombian universities and research
institutes conducting research on improving urban informal settlements.
Robert M. Buckley
is an
Urban Housing Adviser at the World Bank, and a member of the Advisory
Board of Global Urban Development. He has worked on numerous urban and
housing finance projects for the World Bank over the past 20 years, and
is the author or co-author of many books, articles, and reports,
including Housing Finance in Developing Countries,
Thirty Years of
Shelter Lending,
and Shelter Strategies for the Urban Poor.
Luiz Reynaldo de Azevedo Cardoso
is a Professor of Civil Engineering at the Polytechnic School of the
University of Sao Paulo in Brazil.
Dean Cira
is a Senior Urban Specialist at the World Bank, who has worked in
Brazil, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Venezuela, and Mexico, primarily on
projects focusing on municipal development, slum upgrading, and housing.
Chris E. Cloete
is a Professor in the Department of Construction Economics and Program
Leader for Real Estate and Research at the University of Pretoria in
Tshwane, South Africa. He is the author of Property Finance in South
Africa and Property Investment in South Africa.
Alain Durand-Lasserve
is a
Senior Research Fellow at the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS)
in Paris, France, and a member of the Board of Directors of Global Urban
Development. He works with the SEDET Research Center at the University
of Paris-Denis Diderot. He has written many articles and reports, and
is co-editor of Holding Their Ground: Secure Tenure for the Urban
Poor in Developing Countries. He works as a consultant for
international aid and development agencies in many African and Asian
countries.
Bruce W. Ferguson
is a consultant and former Senior Housing and Urban Economist at the
World Bank, and a member of the Advisory Board of Global Urban
Development. He previously served as an Urban Development and Housing
Project Officer at the Inter-American Development Bank, and
has published widely on housing and
urban development in developing countries and the U.S.
Mila Freire
is currently a Senior Adviser at the World Bank, with an emphasis on
urban housing and municipal services in Latin America and the
Caribbean. She previously coordinated the Latin American and Caribbean
program for the World Bank Institute, and also has served as a Managing
Director of Portugal’s largest bank, the Caixa Geral de Depositos. She
is co-editor of The Challenge of Urban Government, and has
published extensively in the fields of public financing,
decentralization, and urban management.
Heitor Cesar Riogi Haga
is a civil engineer who teaches at the Polytechic School of the
University of Sao Paulo in Brazil.
Sir Peter Hall
is the Bartlett Professor of Planning and Regeneration at University
College, London, U.K., and the Vice Chairman of Global Urban
Development, also serving as Co-Chair of the GUD Program Committee on
Metropolitan Economic Strategy. His many books include The World
Cities, Cities in Civilization, Urban and Regional Planning, Cities of
Tomorrow, Urban Future 21, Technopoles of the World, and Silicon
Landscapes.
Jerry Kalarickal
is a consultant for the World Bank and co-author with Robert Buckley of
Thirty Years Shelter Lending and Shelter Strategies for the
Urban Poor.
Christine Kessides
is a Lead Economist at the World Bank. She is the author of many World
Bank reports, including Cities in Transition: World Bank Urban and
Local Government Strategy, and she recently completed a report for
the Cities Alliance, The Urban Transition in Sub-Saharan Africa:
Implications for Economic Growth and Poverty Reduction.
Amal S. Kumarage
is a Professor of Civil Engineering of the University of Moratuwa in
Colombo, Sri Lanka. He also is serving as the Chairman of the National
Transport Commission in Sri Lanka.
Ricardo Lima
is a Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of
Brasília in Brazil. He previously served as Director of Urban and
Regional Studies at the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA)
in Brasilia.
Manya M. Mooya
is a
Lecturer in the Department of Construction, Economics, and Management at
the University of Cape Town in South Africa. He previously taught in the
Department of Land Management at the Polytechnic of Namibia, and the
Department of Land Economy at Copperbelt University in Zambia.
Glenn Pearce-Oroz
is currently working for the World Bank in Bangladesh as a Senior Water
and Sanitation Specialist. He previously served as a Senior Urban and
Municipal Development Officer for the U.S. Agency for International
Development (USAID) in Honduras, where he managed decentralization and
urban governance activities in 32 cities throughout the country.
Carole Rakodi
is a Professor of
International Urban Development at the University of Birmingham in the
U.K. She is editor or co-editor of Urban Livelihoods,
Building Sustainable Human Settlements, Managing Fast Growing
Cities, and The Urban Challenge in Africa.
Ricardo Rinaldelli
is an architect and civil engineer teaching at the Polytechnic School of
the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil.
Mahavir Singh
works for the Planning Commission of the Government of India.
Belinda Yuen
is an Associate Professor of Urban Planning in the Department of Real
Estate and the School of Design and Environment at the National
University of Singapore, and a member of the Board of Directors of
Global Urban Development, also serving as Co-Chair of the GUD Program
Committee on Celebrating Our Urban Heritage. Her many published articles
and books include Planning Singapore, Sustainable Cities in the 21st
Century, Singapore Housing, and Urban Quality of Life.
Cecilia Zanetta
is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Geography at the University
of Tennessee, Knoxville. She is the author of The Influence of the
World Bank on National Housing and Urban Policies. During the past
15 years, she has worked as a consultant for the World Bank and the
Inter-American Development Bank in Mexico, Argentina, and other Latin
American countries.
